Colchicine 0.5 mg (10 tablets)
Colchicine is a medication used to treat or prevent gout attacks (high uric acid levels in the blood). It is also used to treat familial Mediterranean fever, a genetic disorder causing inflammation of the stomach, chest, and joints with recurring fever.
Dosage: Follow the doctor's prescription.
- Acute Gout in Adults: For acute gout attacks, start with 1 mg, followed by 0.5 mg after 1 hour, within 12 hours of an attack. Treatment can continue after 12 hours with a maximum dose of 0.5 mg every 8 hours. Treatment ends when symptoms improve or a total of 6 mg is given. Another course can be started after at least 3 days. Alternatively, start with 1.2 mg at the first sign of flare-up, followed by 0.6 mg after 1 hour (max 1.8 mg in 1 hour).
- Familial Mediterranean Fever (Adults): 1.2–2.4 mg per day as a single dose or split into two doses, adjustable by 0.3 mg per day as needed.
- Children: 4–6 years: 0.3–1.8 mg/day; 6–12 years: 0.9–1.8 mg/day; 12 years and older: same as adult dose.
- Acute Gout Prophylaxis (Adults): During initiation of uric acid-lowering therapy, take 0.5 mg twice daily or 0.6 mg once daily, up to 1.2 mg/day. Treatment duration depends on flare frequency, gout duration, and presence/size of tophi.
Directions for Use: Take with food.
Caution: Requires a doctor's prescription. Use with caution in elderly patients, debilitated patients, or those with heart, liver, kidney, or gastrointestinal disorders. Pregnancy Category C: May pose risks, use only if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Animal studies show risks, and no studies have been conducted on pregnant women.
